Mueller Named Midwest Gymnast-Of-The-Week

NORMAN, Okla. - Junior Heath Mueller of the No. 1 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team was named the NCAA Midwest Gymnast of the Week by Inside Gymnastics Magazine on Wednesday afternoon. It is Mueller first award of the season and the eighth consecutive week the Sooners have snagged the regional award. All totaled, OU has received 16 weekly awards in nine weeks of competition.

Mueller filled in for Nissen Emery Award finalist Daniel Furney in the all-around for OU against Illinois last weekend and recorded a career-high of 53.900. His score landed him in second place in the all-around and was the second best all-around total by any Sooner this season not named Furney. Mueller finished no lower than fifth on any individual event, while topping out with a second place finish on the parallel bars (9.050).

Mueller is ranked No. 9 in the all-around with a two-score average of 52.975. Furney is the top ranked all-arounder in the NCAA.

In other news relating to OU men's gymnastics, the Sooners extended their lead in terms of two-score average in the weekly rankings. The top-ranked Sooners (219.837) lead No. 2 Penn State by 1.562 and No. 3 Ohio State by 2.325. OU is the top ranked team on pommel horse, still rings and high bar, while ranking no lower than No. 3 on the other three events.

OU has a bye weekend before the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships in Lincoln, Neb., March 28-29.
