Young Brings Home Only American Hardware In Paris

NORMAN, Okla.- OU men's gymnastics assistant coach Guard Young was the most successful American gymnast over the weekend in the French Internationals meet. Young finished second on the floor exercise with a score of 9.625. Along with the silver medal, Young receives World Cup qualifying points. Young was the only American to place on an event.

The event-final only competition featured a day of qualifying (Saturday) with the top six (two per country maximum; plus a "wild card" spot for the top French gymnast on each event, if no French athlete finished in the top six) moving on to today's finals. Prize money was awarded to all finalists along with World Cup qualifying points.

2001 US Champ Sean Townsend, the current World Cup bronze medalist on rings and parallel bars, didn't move past Saturday's qualifying after falling on p-bars (8.475). Townsend also missed out on a high bar spot, finishing eighth in qualifying with a 9.5.

Young, who also competed on rings and vault, earned a 8.938 on vault and finished just missed qualifying for the still rings finals with a score of 9.35. Brett McClure was also impressive, just missing finals berths on both parallel bars and high bar, where he earned matching 9.425's for eighth and ninth place respectively. McClure did advance to the pommel horse finals, where he finished fifth.
