NORMAN, Okla. - Senior Daniel Furney of the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team is on a roll like none other in the sport. With Thursday's announcements, Furney is the only gymnast in the nation to receive the NCAA Gymnast of the Week in consecutive weeks and has also received the award more times (3) than any other gymnast this season. Furney's collection of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week awards now stands at three, most in the conference, and he is the first back-to-back winner in 2003.
Furney used an NCAA record all-around score of 56.350 to catapult the Sooners to a NCAA scoring record of 222.500 against Ohio State and Stanford last weekend.
Furney finished in the top three in six of the seven (including all-around) event standings, including first place efforts in the all-around, parallel bars (9.450) and high bar (9.700). His 9.700 on the high bar was an OU school record. The senior landed in second on vault with score of 9.35 and swung to a second place finish on pommel horse with a score of 9.450. Furney's only finish outside the top three was on still rings where he scored a 9.450 and finished tied for sixth. Furney's only score below the 9.00 threshold was an 8.95 on the floor, which garnered the senior co-captain a third place finish. Furney now holds four of the seven Oklahoma school event records.
Inside Gymnastics magazine bestowed another honor on the Oklahoma program, naming fellow senior Josh Landis the NCAA Midwest Gymnast of the Week. Landis posted a word class score of 9.600 on the pommel horse and 9.35 on the high bar, with the scores landing the co-captain in first and second on the respective events. Landis is currently ranked No. 7 on the pommel horse and No. 8 on the floor exercise.
The Sooners will put their undefeated season on the line when they face No. 5 Illinois Saturday, March 15 at 7 p.m. If Oklahoma is successful, it will be the first team in the program's history to end the season with a perfect record.
