NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma senior Daniel Furney was named NCAA Gymnast of the Week by Inside Gymnastics for his efforts over the weekend at Nebraska. Fellow senior Brett Covey garnered the NCAA Midwest Gymnast of the Week award from the same publication.
Furney recorded the nation's highest all-around score of the weekend, with a 54.800, which is also the second highest all-around score this season. Furney also landed a 9.700 on vault, which is the second highest individual score in the NCAA this season behind teammate Brett Covey's 9.850 on still rings.
"Daniel had a fine performance at Nebraska," said OU Head Coach Mark Williams. "He jumped to the nation's top score on vault and second on all-around. He continues to lead Oklahoma's team and we look forward to similar results in the future."
Furney currently ranks No. 2 in the all-around, No. 1 on vault, No. 2 on parallel bars, No. 4 on high bar, No . 11 on floor exercise and No. 15 on pommel horse.
"I am extremely honored to get this award," said Furney. "I think this weekend's competition was good but definitely not where we want to be. We showed signs of our capabilities and hopefully we can continue to improve as we continue to defend our national title."
This marks the second straight week that Furney has received a weekly honor and the fifth such accolade for the program this season. Furney was named Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Gymnast of the Week for the week of Jan. 20 after his performance at the Rocky Mountain Open.
Covey snagged first place with a 9.700 on the still rings at Nebraska this past weekend and currently holds the nation's top two individual scores (9.850, 9.700 tied with Furney). This is the second consecutive week that Covey has received the NCAA Midwest Gymnast of the Week Award.
Furney, Shannon Carrion, Josh Landis, Jamie Henderson and David Henderson will travel to the individual only Winter Cup competition in Las Vegas, Nev. Feb. 7-8.
OU hosts its first home meet of the season Feb. 14, against No. 5 Iowa at 7p.m. at the Lloyd Noble Center. The meet is a coed dual and will also feature the Sooner women's gymnastics squad against the Hawkeyes. Admission to the meet is $5 for adults and $2 for children.
