Columbus, Ga. - Despite a pair of two-run homers by senior Leah Gulla, No. 9 LSU defeated No. 10 Oklahoma in extra innings, 7-4, at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Ga., Sunday afternoon.

Oklahoma (7-3) took a quick two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning when Gulla (2-for-4) blasted a homer to left field. The Sooners pushed the margin to 4-0 in the bottom of the third when Gulla again hit a two-run roundtripper -- this time to left center.

LSU (11-4) answered in the top of the fourth. The Tigers loaded the bases and OU freshman pitcher Nicole Denes walked LSU's Jennie Reeves for the first score. Freshman Dana Askins replaced Denes on the mound and walked Camille Harris for another run. Tiger leadoff hitter LaDonia Hughes (2-for-4) then singled down the left field line for two RBI and the score was tied, 4-4.

The teams traded scoreless innings through the eighth inning. In the top of the ninth, LSU's Megann Steege was placed at second base in accordance to international tiebreaker rules and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jennie Reeves. LaDonia Hughes doubled to left field to plate Steege and the Tigers pushed their lead to 7-4 when Sara Fitzgerald homered to left field.

The Sooners were unable to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth and LSU took the 7-4 win.

Askins took the loss for Oklahoma and dropped to 0-2. She gave up three runs on four hits, walked two and struck out two LSU batters. In her 3.2 innings pitched, Denes gave up four runs on three hits, walked five and struck out three Tigers.

OU was led by Gulla with her two homers and fellow seniors Erin Evans (2-for-4) and Kelli Braitsch (1-for-4) at the plate. Freshman April Valdez contributed six putouts while Braitsch, Heather Scaglione and Tiffany Weight each accounted for five putouts in the game.

The Sooners are next scheduled to play Oklahoma City in Norman on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. but weather may affect the game. Check SoonerSports.com for the latest information on 2003 OU softball.
