NORMAN, Okla.-For the third consecutive week senior Daniel Furney of the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team has received a weekly award, this time being named NCAA Midwest Gymnast of the Week by Inside Gymnastics. Furney received Inside Gymnastics National honor and the MPSF weekly honor in the two prior weeks.
"This is another great honor," said Furney. "My experience at the Winter Cup was great and something I can build on the rest of the season. I am really looking forward to the rest of the NCAA season and defending our national championship."
Furney received the award for his fifth place finish in the all-around at the Winter Cup in Las Vegas, Nev., Feb. 7-8. Furney posted a score of 52.750 in the all-around, the third highest score of any collegiate gymnast and a better score than three current members of the United States Olympic Training Center team.
Furney also finished third on parallel bars with a score of 9.125.
This marks the sixth weekly award bestowed upon the OU men's gymnastics program in four weeks of competition.
The Sooners host their first home dual of the season when they face No. 7 Iowa at the Llloyd Noble Center, Fri. Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. Admission to the meet is $5 for adults and $2 for children. For more information on tickets, call (800) 456-GoOU.
