College football's all-time winningest coach and the head coach of one of the teams that will compete for the Division I-A national championship are among the American Football Coaches Association's 2003 AFCA Regional Coach of the Year winners as voted by the AFCA membership.
"What makes this award so special is that this is the only coach of the year award voted on exclusively by the coaches themselves," AFCA Executive Director Grant Teaff said. "The winners are selected by the coaches they compete with and against on a daily basis."
The AFCA recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association's four divisions: I-A, I-AA, Division II (NCAA Division II and NAIA schools) and Division III. The winners are selected by active members of the Association who vote for coaches in their respective regions and divisions.
Oklahoma's Bob Stoops has earned Division I-A Region 4 honors for the third time in his five-year head coaching career as he has led the Sooners to a 12-1 record, a berth in the Sugar Bowl and a possible national championship this season.
Joining Stoops as winners in Division I-A are West Virginia's Rich Rodriguez (Region 1), Mississippi's David Cutcliffe (Region 2), Northern Illinois' Joe Novak (Region 3) and Southern California's Pete Carroll (Region 5).
In Division I-AA, the winners are Colgate's Dick Biddle (Region 1); Wofford's Mike Ayers (Region 2); Florida Atlantic's Howard Schnellenberger (Region 3); Southern Illinois' Jerry Kill (Region 4) and McNeese State's Tommy Tate (Region 5).
In Division II, the winners are Mansfield's Chris Woods (Region 1); North Alabama's Mark Hudspeth (Region 2); Saginaw Valley State's Randy Awrey (Region 3), MidAmerica Nazarene's Mike Cochran (Region 4) and Mesa State's Joe Ramunno (Region 5). St. John's (Minn.)
John Gagliardi earned Division III Region 5 honors after leading St. John's to another unbeaten regular season and a berth in the semifinals of the Division III playoffs. Earlier this season Gagliardi recorded the 410th win of his legendary career to become the winningest coach in the history of college football.
Joining Gagliardi in Division III are Springfield's Mike DeLong (Region 1); Waynesburg's Jeff Hand (Region 2); East Texas Baptist's Ralph Harris (Region 3) and Wheaton's Mike Swider (Region 4).
