Jammal Brown Journal No. 11

OU offensive tackle Jammal Brown takes Sooner fans behind the scenes as Oklahoma plays its 2003 season. Brown gives us his perspective from the offensive side of the team.

Let's go with question No. 1...

Jammal, if you had to pick one play out of all the big plays we've seen this season, which would be your favorite?

It would probably be Mark Clayton's play at Colorado. It was third down and we needed a first down to secure the victory and Mark -- being the player he is -- not only gets the first down, but makes about 10 guys miss as he sprints 75 or 80 yards to the end zone.

It just shows how great he is. He got the first down and took it all the way to the house making guys miss. It put the game out of reach for Colorado. That's real big to have happen when you're on the road. Colorado had fought back into the game. For Mark to end all their hopes right there -- it was just a great play.

Who is the one guy on the team that you think never gets enough credit? Also, please talk about some of the young offensive linemen...

A guy that's underrated is probably Jejuan Rankins. He makes big plays. He doesn't always get the long touchdowns and he's in the shadow of Mark Clayton. But I remember against Oklahoma State, it was like third and 18 and Jejuan Rankins caught the ball and got a toe down to make an amazing catch. He gets us out of a lot of situations -- it will be third and five and he'll get seven yards and get pushed out of bounds. It may not look like a big deal but if we go down and score on the drive -- you have to go back and look at those plays that keep the drive going. Both Jejuan and Will Peoples have a knack for that.

We should be in pretty good shape on the offensive line in the future. We have guys like Akim Millington who is coming along well. He has great size and he has good hands. Antonn Reid probably sticks out to me the most. He was kind of a late recruit but he signed on and since he's been here, he's improved each week. I think he's going to be one of our interior linemen -- maybe at the center or guard position. He has good feet and he's strong -- he's just young right now. With time, he should be a great player.

I've heard comments about Jason White from just about everyone except the guys who take care of him. I think your comments are long overdue...

Jason's not real quiet but he talks to who he feels comfortable around. Most people think the quarterback is always the focal of attention but Jason kind of sits back and observes things. He's real fun to be around. He's a good guy.

Hey Jammal, big Sooner fan up here in New England. What's it like to be hitting every play and are you sore after the game?
- Susan from Boston, Mass.

After a game I'm not really that sore. My fingers usually hurt but that's about it. I like hitting every play. That's just part of the game. This is the only sport you really get to hit somebody and not get into trouble for it. I like to crush heads every play. It's fun.

Hi Jammal...what does a typical visit for a high school recruit to OU look like?
- Al from Moore, Okla.

Usually, the recruit flies in to the airport and an assistant coach picks them up. They get back here and have a tour of the locker room. They have food laid out in the Santee Lounge like barbecue, chicken and wings -- something like that. Then, that night they take them to a nice resturant for dinner and the recruit is usually assigned to a player. That player usually takes the recruit out to meet people -- show him the campus and the city. The next day, they'll go to the game and be on the sidelines to soak up the atmosphere and come into the locker room. We'll show them the facilities and then they take them out to eat again that night. After that, he'll hang around the fellas again, with the team, getting to know people. Sunday, usually they head out after a good breakfast.

Jammal, I think you're one of the best OT's in the game right now and I've been keeping up with you through your journals. What's one thing that you think people would be surprised to know about you?

I'm like this big football player -- probably pretty intimidating -- but man, I'm the nicest guy you're gonna meet. Most people think I'd be mean because I play mean but that's not the case at all. Me and Brandon Jones are like 10-year-olds. We play video games and in the summertime we have water gun fights. Sometimes we just sit in our front yard and make water balloons and throw them at each other. Or, shoot baskets with little kids in the neighborhood. I think to be successful, you have to have fun and not be serious all the time.
