Jammal Brown Journal No. 7

Sooner offensive tackle Jammal Brown takes Sooner fans behind the scenes as OU plays its 2003 season. Brown gives us his perspective from the offensive side of the team. Journal Entry No. 7 (Nov. 4, 2003)
There were a lot of people waiting for us when we pulled up in our bus at the Switzer Center before the game. More than usual -- probably because ESPN GameDay was here and it was the Bedlam Game. It was an exciting atmosphere to see all the support we had. Seeing all those people there so early before the game was great. It was cool.

Jammal, it's two days later and I'm still trying to get my voice back after the OSU game. Was the crowd a factor in that game?

Yes, the crowd was a big factor. A buddy of mine that plays for OSU told me that our stadium was louder than Texas A&M the week before. They had problems getting plays in and getting plays changed at the line of scrimmage. It made the play clock run down. So, they were kind of confused pretty much most of the game. Also, Coach Stoops gave the fans a gameball for all the support -- being loud and making it a great atmosphere. It was loud and the crowd played a big part in the game.

Jammal, that was a great game on Saturday against OSU. Do you ever wish the offensive line got more recognition?

Erica, it would be nice I guess to get more recognition. But our job is kind of a "dirty" job. We're down in the trenches. It's cool to have your name called out but to me, it really doesn't bother me.

Jammal, what's your favorite thing to eat?
- Kim from Wichita, Kansas

My favorite is what my mother used to make. Korean ribs with rice and bulgogi. Bulgogi is like a meat that's seasoned and cooked and put over rice. You use the juice you cooked it in and pour it over the rice. It's great.

What goes through your mind when it's third and long on your own 20 and you know the other team is bringing the heat? I remember when I was playing high school and I was just thinking not to get an offsides penalty.

Me too. I just think that if it's third and long -- they're probably going to be blitzing. I have to get back in time -- so you want to get a good jump when the quarterback says "hut". It also goes through my mind not to have a false start. I try to see the hole fill and just look at my guy and look at the linebacker and just look at their body language to see if they're in a stance to come and blitz or see if they're just bluffing. I'm looking at everything on my side of the field. See how high they are, see if a guy's blitzing or not. I just focus on the other team.

You seem like a cool cat. I was wondering if you talk much trash to the defensive line during the game?
- Jason from Eufaula, Oklahoma

I talk a little bit (laughs). But only when they start it first. I mean, yeah, I'm really a nice guy off the field. But on the field -- I'm a mean dude. I mean, you have to be. I play offensive line! I'm going to hit you in the mouth and then let you know about it. That's how I roll.
