NORMAN, Okla. Men's gymnastics head coach Mark Williams announced today the signings of the 2004-05 freshmen class with Taqiy Abdullah and Jonathan Horton inking letters of intent.
“We signed two of the top five guys in the country and it does not get much better than that,” remarked Williams.
“They potentially represent one of the better classes out there and we are excited for them to join us next season.”
Taqiy Abdullah is the brother of current Sooner Mubarak Abdullah. He was coached by Rustam Sharipov and Kevin Mazeika at the Houston Gymnastic Academy. Abdullah placed fourth in the all around at the USA Championships and participated in USA vs. Canada competition. In addition, Abdullah was an all-around champion at the 2002 USA Junior Nationals and the Junior Pan American Games. His parents are Amin and Fatimah Abdullah.
“Taqiy is an amazing gymnastics talent,” said Williams. “He will be a great addition to our program and has a bright future as a gymnast.”
Jonathan Horton was coached at Cypress Gymnastics Academy in Houston by former Sooner, Tom Meadows. At the USA Championships, Horton was the all around National Champion. Horton placed fourth in the all around at the Senior Pan American Games in 2003 and second in the all around in the Junior International Championships in Japan this year as well. In 2002, Horton took first in the Junior Nationals on the floor, still rings, vault and parallel bars. He is the son of Margo and Robert Horton.
“Jonathan is the No. 1 junior gymnast in the country coming out of high school,” commented Williams. “He has an exciting future as an Oklahoman standout and will be a valuable asset to our program.”
