Mobile White Gives OU Options on Offense

White An O'Brien Award Semifinalist

November 13, 2003 | Football

Oklahoma quarterback Jason White has been named one of 10 semifinalists for the 2003 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback by The Davey O'Brien Foundation. The O'Brien Selection Committee, composed of national sportswriters and commentators, will vote later this month to narrow the field again. The three finalists will be announced on Monday, December 1 by the National College Football Awards Association in a joint effort among college football award programs.

White, who missed parts of each of the two previous seasons due to knee injuries, is now leading one of the nation's top offenses with 32 touchdown passes and just six interceptions. The senior from Tuttle, Okla., has completed 195-of-294 passes for 2,745 yards. His pass efficiency rating of 176.99 leads the NCAA.

Prior to the season, most figured Oklahoma could survive if the Sooners got reasonably good play at the quarterback position. OU has done more than survive and has certainly gotten play that rates better than "good." The Sooners rank No. 1 in the nation in scoring (43.8), No. 1 in pass efficiency (178.96), No. 8 in total offense (476.4) and No. 12 in passing (297.9).

The other nine semifinalists, in alphabetical order, are: Josh Harris, Sr., Bowling Green; Matt Leinart, Soph., USC; John Navarre, Jr., Michigan; Philip Rivers, Sr., North Carolina State; Ben Roethlisberger, Jr., Miami (Ohio); Rod Rutherford, Sr., Pittsburgh; Jeff Smoker, Sr., Michigan State and B.J. Symons, Sr., Texas Tech.

White also is a finalist for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.

The winner of the 2003 Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award will be announced on the 2003 Home Depot College Football Awards Show, 7:00 PM EST, Thursday, Dec. 11, 2003. The show will air on ESPN live from the Atlantic Dance Hall on the BoardWalk at Disney, right next to Epcot in Orlando, Fla. The winner will be honored at the 27th annual O'Brien Awards Dinner, February 16, 2004, at The Fort Worth Club, Fort Worth, Texas. Air transportation is provided by American Airlines, the official airline of the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.
