Enjoying one of the best season performances by an Oklahoma wide receiver in recent history, Mark Clayton's efforts are also being recognized on the national level as the junior standout was named a semifinalist for the Biletnikoff Award on Thursday. One of 10 semifinalist for the award given annually to the top receiver in the country, Clayton has emerged as one of the nation's elite after being the primary target this season for the second-best scoring offense in the country.
In his first full season as a regular starter for the Sooners, Clayton leads a strong corps of Oklahoma receivers in every category. Clayton's team-leading statistics on the year include 44 catches for 785 yards, eight touchdowns and a 17.8 yards per catch average. His 98.1 yards per game average ranks ranks third in the Big 12 Conference and 11th-nationally. Even more impressive, the Arlington, Texas, native has been at his best after the catch as indicated by 309 of his total yards have come in those situations.
Most recently, Clayton has pulled down a touchdown grab in each of his last four-straight games and has accounted for six of his eight touchdown receptions over that same time span. Additionally, he has 93 or more receiving yards in six consecutive games and has recorded four 100-yard outings this season.
Other semifinalists for the award include Larry Fitzgerald (Pittsburgh), Rashaun Woods (Oklahoma State), Mike Williams (Southern Cal), Reggie Williams (Washington), Roy Williams (Texas), Kellen Winslow (Miami), Michael Clayton (LSU), Jerricho Cotchery (N.C. State) and Craphonso Thorpe (Florida State).
The winner will be announced at the annual ESPN College Football Awards show in December. The award is named after former Florida State and Oakland Raider great Fred Biletnikoff and is sponsored by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation.
