Soccer Nets Crucial Big 12 Win Over Texas Tech, 4-1

October 17, 2003 | Soccer

NORMAN, Okla. The OU soccer team took on Big 12 foe Texas Tech Friday night at John Crain Field and handed the Red Raiders a 4-1 defeat.  It was the best offensive output and largest margin of victory of the season for OU.

The last time the Sooners scored four goals in a game was a season ago against Texas Tech (4-0) back on Sept. 29, 2002.

“We did what we had to do offensively,” said Oklahoma head coach Randy Evans.  “When you think about it, this game put us in a difficult position as Sunday's opponent, Baylor, had tonight off.  So because of the glitch in their  schedule, they will be well rested and that made us hard to not look past a Texas Tech team tonight.  But I was thrilled with the way we came out and gave it a 100 percent tonight.  Logan played great and put the game away with her energy and play.  And because of that and the other two goals, we were able to rest a lot of personnel for the home finale on Sunday.”

Senior forward Logan Womack got things started for OU, tallying her fifth goal of the season off a double assist from Jessica Talton (1) and Kristin Vesely (4).  The goal was scored in the 21st minute after Womack blasted the ball in the back of the net past the Texas Tech goalie, Beth Lippert, on the left side.

At 25:53, Kristin Vesely scored a goal of her own (second of the season) unassisted to put OU on top 2-0.  That is how the first half ended with OU leading by two goals and leading the shot count, 5-4.

It did not take long for the Sooners to score after the second session got underway, Womack scored her second goal of the contest in the 50th minute unassisted.  The goal marked the sixth of the season for the Norman native, who now leads the team in goals and points (15).

Before Tech broke up the shutout in the 83rd minute off a goal from Catie Arsenault, the Sooners' Kady Kelly netted her first collegiate goal, assisted by Christi Basgall (1) at the 81:14 mark to put OU on top 4-0.  After ninety minutes of action, the teams were knotted at 12 shots a piece and OU recorded the only corner kick of the game.

In over 84 minutes of action, OU goalie Catherine Wade made four saves allowing the one goal improving her record to 8-4-3.  Junior Keara Jones finished out the game with one save for the Crimson and Cream in goal, as the Sooners won their sixth game at home this year.  The Sooners are now 6-1-1 when playing at John Crain Field in 2003, with their lone loss coming at the hands of current No. 4 Texas A&M.

With the crucial conference win, OU's overall mark improved to 8-4-3 and 3-2-2 in Big 12 action, as Texas Tech fell to 2-10-2 (1-6).  The Sooners will look to finish off the home portion of the schedule in successful fashion with a 1 p.m. game with Baylor on Sunday.  The contest will mark the final regular season home game for four OU seniors, as Heidi Martinson, Ashley Lacey, Jessica Talton and Logan Womack are honored before the game for Senior Day.
