ORMAN, Okla.-Senior Brett Covey of the Oklahoma men's gymnastics team was named NCAA Midwest Region Gymnast of the Week by Inside Gymnastics Magazine.

Covey received the honor thanks to a 9.625 on the still rings at the Rocky Mountain Open Event Final, Jan. 25. The performance landed the Canadian World Championship team member in first place in the finals. Covey beat out three USOTC competitors on the event and was the only non-USOTC member to claim first place during the finals.

"This is great honor," said Covey. "My experience at last year's World Championships motivated me as a gymnast. Hopefully this is just the beginning of a very successful season for myself and more importantly, my team, as we look to defend the national championship we won in 2002."

Covey scored a 9.500 on rings during the team finals at the RMO, Jan. 24.

Covey currently holds the NCAA's highest individual score with a 9.850 on rings, which he collected in a dual meet at the University of Michigan Jan. 18.

The OU men's gymnastics squad travels to Lincoln for a dual meet with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Sat. Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m.
