Norman, Okla. - Former Sooner football great Joe Washington is one of five who will be iducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame at ceremonies in Waco, Texas, on Feb. 12, 2003. Joining Washington in this induction class are Emmitt Smith, Eddie Reese, Bobby Joe Conrad and Michael Carter.
The induction ceremony is set for 7 p.m., at Baylor University's Ferrell Center. From 5-:30 p.m., a reception will be held at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. At that time, patrons can meet the inductees and view new exhibits.
Washington ranks No. 3 in career rushing yards at Oklahoma with 3,998 yards. His best rushing season was in 1974 when he posted 1,321 yards, the eighth-best one-season total in school history. He is the school's career leader in all purpose yards with 5,860.
The Port Arthur, Texas, native was an All-American in 1974 and 1975. He finished third in the 1974 Heisman voting and fifth in 1975.
Much of the Sooner success can be traced to Washington's time in Norman (1972-75). During his career, OU went 43-2-1 with national championships in 1974 and 1975.
Washington played nine seasons in the National Football League, including four with the Washington Redskins. His best rushing season came in 1978 when he picked up 956 yards with the Baltimore Colts. He also played for the San Diego Chargers and the Atlanta Falcons.
Washington was on the Redskins' roster for two Super Bowls.
