Postgame Notes
Oklahoma vs. Alabama
September 7, 2002
Oklahoma Memorial Stadium

  • Today's attendance of 75,564 was the largest in a season opener for OU in Memorial Stadium's current configuration (current capacity: 72,765).

  • The last time the Sooners had a 20-point lead at halftime, lost the lead and came back for a win was the 1975 national championship team's 28-27 win over Missouri on Nov. 15. A Joe Washington 71-yard run on fourth and one and his successful conversion of a two-point PAT gave OU a 28-27 victory in Columbia.

  • Senior DB Andre Woolfolk blocked an Alabama field goal attempt in the first quarter. Woolfolk also blocked a field goal against Texas on October 6, 2001.

  • The safety scored by the Oklahoma defense in the first quarter marked the first time Alabama has yielded a safety in more than six years. Alabama last gave up a safety on Nov. 11, 1995, to the Bulldogs of Mississippi State.

  • With 120 receiving yards in the first half, Mark Clayton recorded his third career 100-yard receiving game. Clayton's previous high was 108 yards against Baylor in 2001. Clayton finished with 129 yards for the game, the 18th-best mark in OU school history.

  • QB Jason White's 33-yard TD pass to Mark Clayton in the first quarter put him over 1,000 yards in total offense for his career. His 51-yard net total today gives him 1,032 yards in total offense.

  • Derrick Strait's interception in the first quarter marked the first pick of the 2002 season for the OU defense. Strait has now recorded six career interceptions.

  • Antwone Savage's 17-yard reception late in the second quarter put him over 1,500 receiving yards for his career. He becomes only the fourth Sooner to reach that milestone. Savage finished the day with four catches for 42 yards, taking his career total to 1,519 yards.

  • Senior RB Quentin Griffin's reception late in the second quarter extended his school record of consecutive games with a reception to 32.

  • Blake Ferguson's 56-yard punt in the second quarter marked his first of more than 50 yards in his Sooner career. His older brother, former OU All-American Jeff Ferguson, had 52 punts of 50 yards or more for his career.

  • Nate Hybl's 51-yard touchdown pass to Mark Clayton late in the second quarter marked the longest TD pass for OU since Hybl bombed Kansas State for a 75-yard TD to Antwone Savage on Sept. 29, 2001. It the longest TD pass caught by Clayton in his career.

  • Alabama's touchdown in the third quarter marked the first TD allowed by Oklahoma in 10 quarters. It was also the first rushing touchdown allowed in 28 quarters dating back to a second-quarter Nebraska TD on Oct. 27, 2001.

  • It took Sooner opponents 95 minutes and 46 seconds into the 2002 season to find the endzone. Alabama scored a third quarter TD to break the stranglehold.

  • Alabama's blocked punt for a touchdown late in the third quarter was the first against OU since Texas scored on a block on Oct. 12, 1996.

  • Eric Bassey's 45-yard fumble recovery and return for the Sooners' final touchdown was the OU's first since Roy Williams' TD return against Kansas State on Sept. 29, 2001. It is the first collegiate TD for the redshirt freshman from Garland, Texas.

  • Renaldo Works' 62 yards of receptions (two catches) in OU's final TD drive set a single-game career mark for Works. His previous high was 25 yards vs. Baylor in 2001.

  • The Sooners' net rushing total of -23 yards in today's game was the lowest all-time production in school history. It marked only the second time in school history (-11 vs. Colorado in 1999) for OU to finish the game with negative rushing yards.

  • Today's game marked the first time in school history for the Sooners to finish with negative yards rushing and a victory.
