NORMAN, Okla. - The $75 million expansion and improvement of Oklahoma Memorial Stadium is well underway and will remain in progress through the 2002 season. During this period of construction, fans will note some changes on game day.
"The fruits of our labor and success are unfolding right before our eyes," said OU Athletics Director Joe Castiglione. "The Oklahoma Memorial Stadium construction will produce results that will bring pride to Sooner fans for many years. For this season, we ask for special cooperation and patience from all our patrons. We have worked to create the best possible environment, but some facets of game day will be different. Together, we can minimize any inconveniences and still enjoy the best atmosphere in college football. At the same time, we can look to the future and the prospects of a beautifully enhanced facility."
Athletics Department and campus officials have held numerous meetings to plan for the 2002 season. A map that clearly outlines entry to the stadium has been produced and will be circulated to media. It also will be posted on SoonerSports.com, the official Web site of OU Athletics.
Here are other points of interest pertaining to the 2002 season at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium ...
Street Closures
Jenkins Ave., is closed between Lindsey and Brooks. During the games,
Jenkins will also be closed from Farmer north to Lindsey. A small portion
of Lindsey - Asp to Lincoln - will be closed just prior to kickoff time for
the duration of the game.
Parking
Most campus parking, which was available on a first-come, first-served basis
in previous years, is still available this season. The cost for parking in
campus lots is $10.
Some reserved permit parking lots have been reallocated. Those not holding reserved lot parking passes, who arrive after all other lots are full, are encouraged to park at the Lloyd Noble Center, where an additional 1,500 parking spaces have been added since last season. Those arriving in recreational vehicles will be parked in a designated area. There is no charge for parking at the LNC. A shuttle ride is available for $2 per person.
Patrons are reminded to avoid parking in yellow-curbed areas and fire lanes. Vehicles parked in those areas may be towed.
The parking garage under construction on the stadium's west side will not be used as a parking facility this season, but pedestrians can walk though the facility to reach entry gates.
Shuttle Services
Three shuttle services are planned at this time.
Restricted Items/Searches
Except for items pertaining to medical conditions or child care, all bags,
backpacks, large cases for binoculars or other items, fanny packs and large
purses (larger than 10" by 10") are prohibited and banned from entrance into
the stadium. Permissible items are subject to search. Stadium officials
are prepared to conduct searches at each point of entry. Other prohibited
items include coolers, ice chests, cans, bottles, banners, umbrellas,
containers of any type and noisemakers.
Stadium Entry
This season there will be more ticket entry points and ticket takers at
Memorial Stadium than in previous seasons. Some 105 entry points will be
open. Several gates will be open, but the main points of entry will be at
each corner of the stadium - Gate 1 on the southwest corner, Gates 11 and 17
on the northwest corner, Gate 33 on the northeast corner and Gate 44 on the
southeast corner. Also, on the west side, Gates 2-10 will be open. Once
patrons leave the stadium, they will not be issued re-entry passes unless
they departed for an emergency.
Gates 33 (northeast corner) and 44 (southeast corner) will be open for OU students two hours prior to kickoff. All gates will be open for the general public 90 minutes prior to kickoff.
Pride of Oklahoma Information
The Pride of Oklahoma's pre-game parade across campus and concert on the
lawn north of Oklahoma Memorial Stadium will be modified. The Pride will
present a brief pre-game concert 90 minutes before each home game
immediately south of Boyd Street, across from campus corner, between
University and Asp Avenues. Following the concert, the Pride will march
down Asp to the stadium and invites fans to join in the parade.
