Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Bob Stoops

On the win:

  • "It's a win, that's about all the positive that we'll take out of it. Give South Florida a lot of credit. They played extremely well. I knew they were a good football team. Jim (Leavitt) did an excellent job coaching them. It's another win. We've got a lot that we need to get better at if we want to compete in the Big 12."

  • "On the last couple of drives, they outplayed us and put the ball in the end zone. Offensively, we really didn't do anything in the entire fourth quarter."

  • "It's good to get turnovers. To me, probably the most important statistics are turnovers and scoring in offense and defense."

  • "There's too much out there today that isn't good enough if we're going to be the kind of team that we hope to be this year."

    On OU's defense:

  • "Defensively, we made some good plays. We're still not where we need to be. We're not getting the pressure that we need to get from our front four or from our blitzing. We've got to make some improvements in the next few weeks."

    On the Sooner offense:

  • "They just didn't get anything going at all in the second half. I don't want to hear any excuses why. The bottom line is they stopped us. We'll re-evaluate everything we're doing, the way we're practicing, the attitude and toughness of our team and see if we can't make some improvements.

  • "We were very average, and I think I'm being polite and nice."

    On the OU rushing game:

  • "They defended better than we were able to execute."

On sophomore DB/punt returner Antonio Perkins:

  • "Antonio is excellent. He's a special player and he showed that tonight. He's incredible with his hands on the football. And he's played great defense as well. Hopefully, he'll continue to make big plays for us."

    On the quarterback position:

  • "In our offense we need to get some things ironed out and make improvements. The QB isn't the problem. Nate is playing well. He's executing well. He's very smart with the football. We need to execute better in all parts of our offense. Everything we're doing needs to improve."

On playing true freshman receiver Jejuan Rankins:

  • "He's playing too well in practice. He's very consistent, plays very hard, and makes plays. He can really help us."

Redshirt Freshman Running Back Kejuan Jones

    On OU's defense:

  • "They played great. You can't ask for anything more than what they did which was basically go out and pitch a shutout for us. Our offense needs to step it up and help them out."

    On turning turnovers into points:

  • "That's what we're supposed to do and that is the one thing that we did well tonight."

    On developing OU's offense:

  • "We just have to get better every week. We know that come Monday at practice we're going to polish up everything that we did wrong tonight. Sometimes you need a game like this to realize what you have to do to get better."

    Junior Free Safety Matt McCoy

    On USF quarterback Marquel Blackwell:

  • "Their quarterback made some plays tonight and there are other quarterbacks in our league who have that ability. We're going to have to start containing better."

On playing against the no-huddle offense:

  • "We just had to pick up the pace a little bit. I don't think that they were doing anything that we couldn't handle."

    Senior Quarterback Nate Hybl

    On OU's offense:

  • "We didn't play very well offensively. I felt like we took a step backwards. Give South Florida credit, they have some athletes. Those guys came in ready to play and I knew they would. We have to be tougher overall. The passing game was good but the decision-making on the running game on my part was bad. That is something that I will have to work on."

    SOUTH FLORIDA QUOTES

    Head Coach Jim Leavitt

    On the Bulls' four turnovers:

  • "Oklahoma lives off turnovers and we had four which tells a lot of the game. We can't fumble the ball or have interceptions because you lose momentum. The penalties are frustrating and we can't have personal fouls."

On OU punt returner Antonio Perkins:

  • "We didn't do much to slow him down and I told our punter to punt away from him. Oklahoma did much better with the punt returns than we did."

    On the game:

  • "A loss is a loss is a loss. Our offense had better production this game and I thought our effort was good, but our punt team was horrible."

    Senior Quarterback Marquel Blackwell:

  • "We didn't do the right stuff tonight and we had too many penalties and turnovers. We came to play football and not worry about the team we were playing."

    Senior Linebacker Kawika Mitchell:

  • "We had a good effort, but we hurt ourselves with penalties and turnovers. We can't win games with that. The team penalties and little things are what always kill you."

    Sophomore Offensive Tackle Derrick Sarosi:

  • "I went into this game expecting to win and I was excited to play big time college football against a big time school and line up against Tommie Harris. The fact is we just shot ourselves in the foot with penalties and that was the difference."
