NORMAN, Okla. - The men's gymnastics team has selected Daniel Furney, Josh Landis and Quinn Rowell as team captains for the 2003 season. The team voted and Head Coach Mark Williams approved its choices.
"These three athletes were here my first year as head coach," said Williams. "They know my system and they know me both personally and as a coach. Since they know the Oklahoma program so well, their leadership skills have come through and fixed a situation, many times before I even know about a problem."
Daniel Furney was OU's most decorated gymnast at last season's NCAA Championships. Furney placed third on the vault, fourth on the high bar and seventh on the parallel bars. Josh Landis finished seventh on the floor excercise at the NCAAs and fourth on the pommel horse at the USA Nationals this summer. Rowell has battled injuries most of his career, but peaked at the right time last season, finishing second on the high bar at NCAAs.
"Furney, Landis and Rowell were here when we came up just short and finished second, " said Williams. "Last season they helped lead us to the championship and now they demand that excellence of themselves and the newcomers."
