Soccer Takes On No. 2 Stanford Friday Night

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma soccer travels to California for the Stanford Nike Invitational Tournament this weekend. OU plays No. 2 Stanford on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (PT) and then meets defending national champion and No. 3 Santa Clara on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. (PT).

The Sooners (6-0-0, 0-0-0 Big 12) defeated then-No. 18 SMU, 1-0, and Arizona, 2-0, this past weekend to extend their win streak to six games. OU has posted four straight shutouts and outscored its opponents 13-1 to remain undefeated on the season.

Oklahoma handed several "firsts" to its opponents at John Crain Field on Friday and Sunday. SMU (3-2) was held scoreless for the first time this season and suffered its first loss to OU in the series. The Sooners also denied an Arizona score for the first time this season and gave the Wildcats (3-1-1) their first loss.

Arizona head coach Cathy Klein came away impressed with the Sooners after the game on Sunday.

"Oklahoma is a very well-coached and very organized team," said Klein. "I expect to see them in the NCAA tournament this year. They scored quickly after the half, but that was our inexperience and their maturity showing through. I'm not disappointed that we lost to a better team..."

With her score against Arizona, preseason All-Big 12 forward Logan Womack, a junior from Norman, now has 24 goals in her Sooner career and is on pace to break the career goal record of 26 held by former Sooner Jonette Coquat (1998-2001).

Senior forward Krissy Dawson (Peoria, Ariz.) also scored against Arizona and has three goals for the season (14 career). Dawson is tied with Womack in points (eight) and has contributed two assists this season, moving her into a second place tie with former Sooner Heather Morrison on the career assists chart with nine. Jonette Coquat leads in the category with 15 career assists from 1998-2001.

Sophomore goalkeeper Catherine Wade (Midland, Texas) contributed her fourth shutout of the season against Arizona and, with nine career shutouts, is just three away from breaking the school career record for shutouts (11).

The competition at the tournament this weekend will be stiff. Host Stanford is 4-0 and ranked No. 2 in the nation. The Cardinal defeated preseason Big 12 favorite Texas A&M in overtime, 1-0, on Sept. 6 and followed that up two days later by knocking off then-No. 10 Texas, 1-0.

Stanford opened the season with a 3-0 shutout of defending national champion Santa Clara. The Broncos are 3-2 overall, ranked No. 3 nationally and most recently defeated Cal Poly, 1-0, at Mustang Stadium in San Luis Obispo on Sunday. Santa Clara also has notable wins over No. 11 Notre Dame (4-0) and No. 18 Clemson (4-2) this season.

It will be the first meeting between Oklahoma and the two California schools. Stanford is the second straight Pac 10 opponent for the Sooners and the second of three straight teams OU has never played (Arizona, Stanford, Santa Clara.)
