Final Stats

NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma volleyball team jumped out to a 10-0 lead in game one and never looked back sweeping the Lady Tigers of Grambling State 30-13, 30-21 and 30-18, for its first victory of the season today. Oklahoma improves to 1-5, while the Lady Tigers drop to 1-6. OU looks to stay undeafeated in Ewing Grover Olds/GMC Invitational play when they match up against Louisiana Monroe (12 p.m.) and host Tulsa (7 p.m.) Sat., Sept. 14 in the Howard W. Reynolds Center in Tulsa.

"It feels great to get the first win under our belt," said OU Head Coach Kalani Mahi. "We played well and had a season high hitting percentage. Jennifer (Adams) led us offensively, which is a major bonus when you consider she is freshman. On the other hand we still have things to work on, especially reducing our unforced errors. If we learn to manage those, the wins will come more consistently."

Adams set career-highs in kills, 13, and hitting percentage, .475 (13K-4E-19TA). Senior Megan O'Connell had five aces, a personal best, to go along with 10 kills. Senior setter Jessica Barney dished out a match-high 35 assists, while Denise Griffin recorded a career-high 15 digs.

In game one Oklahoma extended its lead to 26-9, minutes later finishing the game at 30-13 for its largest leads of the match and season. OU hit at .379 (15K-4E-29TA) in the first game, by far its highest single game percentage of the season. On the match Oklahoma hit .275 (49-18-102), another season-high.

The Sooners set a few records for the Mahi era. Grambling State's 13 points in game one is an opponent low, since rally scoring era (2001), its match total of 53 points and the point differential of 17 in the opening game are all opponent low records under Mahi.

"I think this win motivated us, " said freshman Jennifer Adams. "We worked very hard this week in preparation for this tourney and it showed in our effort tonight. The momentum should carry us over to tomorrow and into the rest of the season."

Oklahoma opens Big 12 play Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7p.m. against Iowa State in the Howard McCasland Field House.
