* Micheal Hawkins' interception return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter was the first by a true freshman since 1984 when future All-American Rickey Dixon took a pick 41 yards for a score in the second game of the season against Pittsburgh.

* OU last intercepted two passes and took them for scores in 1987 against Oklahoma State. Rickey Dixon returned an INT 95 yards for a score (third-longest in school history) and DE Troy Johnson repeated the feat with a 10-yard INT return for a touchdown.

* Oklahoma quarterback Paul Thompson's TD pass to another true freshman, Travis Wilson (with 0:27 left in the game), marked the first time in school history for a true freshman in his first game to throw a touchdown pass.

* The 68 points scored by Oklahoma tonight were the most scored by OU in the Bob Stoops' era. The previous high was 63 against Texas during the 2000 season.

* The 68-0 victory by Oklahoma tonight was the most lopsided shutout by the Sooners since OU beat Missouri 77-0 in 1986.

First Half Notes

* Senior Antwone Savage's 56-yard touchdown reception early in the first quarter marked the fourth longest TD reception of his career. Savage hauled in a 75-yard reception for a score against Kansas State during the 2001 season.

* Sophomore DT Lynn McGruder started his first game as a Sooner tonight against UTEP. McGruder sat out last season after transferring to OU from Tennessee after the 2000 season.

* Antonio Perkins' 50-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter was the sophomore's fourth career INT and his first pick returned for a score. The play marked the longest interception returned for a score by Oklahoma since J.T. Thatcher ran 85 yards for a TD after an interception against Texas Tech in 2000.

* Officials interrupted the game at 6:49 p.m. with 2:37 left on the clock in the first quarter due to dangerous weather conditions. Play resumed 51 minutes later at 7:40 p.m.

* Renaldo Works' 32-yard TD reception in the second quarter marked the 14th score of his career and the second by air. Works scored on a reception against Rice in 2000.

* Brandon Everage's interception in the second quarter was the fourth of his career.

* Quentin Griffin notched his first rushing touchdown of the season with his 29-yard scamper for a score in the second quarter. The TD marked the 29th rushing touchdown for the senior from Humble, Texas, and the 32nd of his career. With two touchdowns in Sooner bowl games, Griffin has 34 touchdowns in the 34 games he has played at Oklahoma.

* Mark Clayton's 54-yard reception in the second quarter eclipsed the 51-yard TD reception last week against Alabama as his career long.

* OU's 38 points in the first half were the fourth-most scored by the Sooners in the Stoops era. During the 2000 season, Oklahoma hooked Texas for 42 points in the first half and put up 42 points on Baylor in the first 30 minutes. OU scored 41 points against North Carolina in last year's opener.
