Norman, Okla. - University of Oklahoma head football coach Bob Stoops said today that true freshman quarterback Paul Thompson could play in Saturday's game against Texas-El Paso.
"If the opportunity presents himself, we will play him in all likelihood," Stoops said. "We've prepared him to play this week and there is a good chance that he will get into the game."
Thompson will be listed as the second-team quarterback behind Nate Hybl. Hybl moved from the back-up role to the starter last Saturday when Jason White was lost for the season with a knee injury. Redshirt freshman quarterback Brent Rawls might have been No. 2 behind Hybl except he suffered ligament damage to his right thumb during a preseason practice and is not yet ready to play.
Thompson, from Leander, Texas, had been slated to redshirt this season before the injuries took their toll on OU's quarterback position. The 6-4, 185-pounder threw for 1,603 yards as high school a senior and also broke the 1,000-yard barrier in rushing yards.
