Newcomers Go Through First Drills

Norman, Okla. - Here are some notes from Monday's initial newcomer workout ...

* Twenty-seven newcomers reported to two-a-day practices Monday morning. All of OU's signees are fully qualified.

* Freshman placekicker Josh Roberts (Malta, Mt.) has not reported to the team yet and is not expected, head coach Bob Stoops said. Two other newcomers, Steven Sarubbi (Hancock C.C.) and Pete Cuva (Forney, Texas), are now considered the frontrunners to replace three year starter Tim Duncan who completed his eligibility last fall. After Monday morning's practice, Stoops said he hoped to speak with Roberts personally, but "had heard" that Roberts perhaps had a plan to live in New York and not play football. As late as Sunday, Roberts had not informed OU coaches of his change in plans.

* Freshman Rufus Alexander (Baton Rouge, La.) began fall drills practicing at the strong safety position and the staff will evaluate his progress at that position throughout the next two weeks. Alexander was an all-state linebacker at Christian Life Academy.

* Stoops praised freshman walk-on Jacob Rice (Norman, Okla.) and called him one of the "great surprises of the summer." Rice is in contention as the starting long snapper. He was a highly decorated tight end during his high school career.
