NORMAN, Okla. - The OU football team returned to the practice fields
on Thursday after successfully completing the first scrimmage of fall practice
Wednesday evening at Memorial Stadium. Head coach Bob Stoops kept team drills
going during the evening practice instead of breaking up into position drills.
"It was going so well -- guys were competitive and going after it," said Stoops.
"I just decided to stay with the team drills."
Block Thrown by White
When asked about Jason White blocking Jimmy Wilkerson on a reverse play during
Wednesday's scrimmage, Stoops seemed pleased with the quarterback's performance.
"It was good -- you've got to do that once in a while," said Stoops. "Of course
we don't want him doing it a lot."
Stoops Lauds Crowd
Stoops was very pleased with the Sooner faithful making their presence known during
the scrimmage Wednesday night. An estimated crowd of 7,000 filled the lower west
side of Memorial Stadium to get a close-up look at the 2002 squad.
"It was awesome," said Stoops of the crowd. "We had some recruits visiting and
on top of that, a lot of our young guys hadn't played here before and got to see
the support. It was a perfect night and the fans cheered well."
Fields and Rawls Miss Practice
Offensive lineman Jerod Fields missed Thursday's practices with a sore back while
defensive lineman Davin Joseph returned after minor cramping as a result of the
scrimmage. Quarterback Brent Rawls was absent due to a death in the family.
The Sooners return to the intramural fields for two sessions on Friday.
