NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma women's golf team advanced to the NCAA Championships after taking seventh place with a score of 931 at the NCAA Central Regional in East Lansing, Mich., Saturday afternoon at the Forest Akers Golf Course. The Sooners qualified for their first NCAA Championship since 2000. Tulsa claimed the regional title by four strokes ahead of Ohio State. The individual title was claimed by Stacy Prammanasudh of Tulsa with a score of 219.
Junior Allison Johnson and sophomore Lisa Meldrum paved the way for the Sooners with a tie for 11-place with a score of 231. Johnson recorded three birdies on the back nine to finish three-over par in the final round and Meldrum turned in four birdies to finish the day at two over. Sophomore Hope Edge carded a 236 for a 38th-place finish. Senior Jennifer Tannehill finished play in 59th place with a score of 241, while fellow senior Wendy Martin turned in a score of 242 for a 63rd-place finish.
"We are really excited," said head coach Carol Ludvigson. "We needed to turn it up on the back nine. Lisa (Meldrum) and Allison (Johnson), who birdied two of the last four holes, really stepped in. The girls really worked hard. We weren't putting very well, but we kept grinding and pulled through."
The Sooners will travel to Auburn, Wash., to compete in the NCAA Championships May 21-24.
