ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Oklahoma baseball team dropped a 15-5 decision to the UTA Mavericks Tuesday at Allan Saxe Stadium to fall to 18-10 on the season. Texas-Arlington scored in each of its eight innings and cranked out 20 hits en route to the victory. Austin Mix (4-3) took the loss for Oklahoma, after allowing six runs over four innings pitched. Jarrett Garza (2-2) got the win for Texas-Arlington.
UTA built a 6-0 lead with two runs in the first, two tallies in both the second and third frames, and two more in the fourth. OU finally got its bats going in the fifth inning, as Ryan Richardson and Matt Bose both doubled, and Luke Alexander and Denver Kitch each drove in a run. The Mavericks answered with a run in the bottom of the fifth and then UTA left fielder Daniel Ortmeier hit a two-run home run to make it 9-2.
The Sooners chipped away at the lead in the seventh inning, as Alexander added his second home run of the year, a solo shot over the right field wall. Eddie Cornejo then singled home Bose and Jason Fransz drilled a base hit to left field to score Kitch and make the score 9-5, UTA. The Mavs, however, scored three more runs in their half of the seventh and added three in the eighth for the final margin.
Buddy Blair, Ryan Williams, Ben Pinkston and Zach Cherry all made relief appearances for the Sooners. For the Mavericks, K.J. Hendricks went 3-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to 22 games, just four shy of the UTA school record, and Jason Severson went 5-for-6 with three doubles and four runs scored.
Today's game was scheduled for March 20, however heavy rain in the Dallas-Fort Worth area forced the game to be postponed. UTA will visit L. Dale Mitchell Park on Wed., April 17 for a 6:30 contest. The loss to Texas-Arlington was Oklahoma's first under head coach Larry Cochell and the first since March 6, 1988.
Oklahoma will next be in action this weekend, as it travels to Lincoln, Neb., to battle No. 12 Nebraska in a three-game set at NU's Haymarket Park. The series with the Cornhuskers will mark the fourth consecutive weekend that the Sooners will be playing a ranked opponent.
