OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The Oklahoma baseball team dropped a tough, out-of-conference contest to No. 5 Alabama 17-3 in front of 2,276 at SBC Bricktown Ballpark. The Crimson Tide built a 10-0 lead in the first three innings, in which Alabama sent eight batters to the plate in each frame. Oklahoma fell to 16-8 (4-2 Big 12) with the loss, while Alabama improved to 22-3 (5-1 SEC), the best start in school history.
Austin Mix (4-2) took the loss for Oklahoma after pitching an inning and a third and allowing seven runs on five hits. Sophomore Jared Woodward (2-1) picked up the win for the Tide, pitching four innings and giving up just two hits and an unearned run, while striking out four.
"We didn't play well at all tonight and after spotting a good team like that 10 runs, it's very hard to come back," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "We need to forget this one and bounce back, because we've got an important Big 12 series with Baylor coming up. It's our job as a coaching staff to encourage these guys and get their confidence back."
Charlie Frasier belted a towering home run into the upper deck in right field, his sixth round-tripper on the season and his second game in a row with a homer. Luke Alexander and Reggie Willits each doubled in tonight's game.
Alabama scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to take an 11-1 lead. The Tide cruised to the win from there, adding two runs in the seventh inning and four in the eighth. Jeremy Brown went 3-for-5 with two doubles, four runs scored and a career-high five runs batted in, and every member of the Bama starting lineup registered a hit. In addition, all of the Alabama batters who had at bats reached base.
Oklahoma returns to Big 12 Conference action this weekend as No. 13 Baylor visits Norman for a three-game set at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Game times are set for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.
