RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Oklahoma Sooners were defeated by California-Riverside 8-6 in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday at the Riverside Sports Complex, falling to 8-3. Austin Mix, who allowed three runs during his four innings of work, took the loss while Drew Murphy (1-2) got the win for the Highlanders. Cordell Perkins got his first save of the year for UCR.
Oklahoma had a big third inning, scoring three runs as both Jason Fransz and Ryan Richardson doubled in runs and Luke Alexander grounded out to bring Charlie Frasier home. However, UCR answered with two runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 5-4 lead. Frasier, playing in his native California, hit a towering home run to left field, his fourth of the season, to tie the score at five.
The Highlanders added a run in both the fifth and seventh innings to seal the win. OU scored a run in the eighth to draw within one run, however a wild pitch by Mix brought home UCR's eighth, and game-sealing, run.
Sophomore Buddy Blair started and threw 2.1 innings, surrendering three runs on four hits while striking out two. Jarod McAuliff pitched an inning and two thirds and allowed UCR two hits and two runs. Reggie Willits was 2-for-4 with two singles and a run scored and Richardson was 2-for-3, including a double. Frasier was 2-for-5 with the home run and Denver Kitch was hit by a pitch three times.
UCR starter Julio Fernandez also lasted just two innings and a third, giving up five hits and two runs. Fernandez walked two Sooners, threw two wild pitches and hit three during his short stint on the mound.
The Oklahoma-UCR series was scheduled to have been played in Norman this weekend, however winter weather in central Oklahoma forced the Sooners to travel west for the three-game set. Oklahoma won the first game of the doubleheader 8-2 and look to win the series from the Highlanders at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Evan Greusel (2-0) will take the mound for OU Sunday.
