Oklahoma Rolls To 18-8 Win Over Western Illinois

NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma baseball squad rolled to an 18-8 win over Western Illinois on Wednesday night, improving to 13-4 (3-0 Big 12) and moving its current win streak to a season-high five games. OU cranked out 15 hits, including four doubles and three home runs. Michael Bradbury (1-0) got the win for Oklahoma after pitching two innings and a third and allowing just one WIU run on three hits.
"This was another good win for us," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "You always need games like this to build chemistry and confidence, as well as to get some guys playing time who don't usually get it. A guy like Wayne Baker, our bullpen catcher, got to play tonight and we again got a nice contribution of our bench. Seeing some of the younger guys get hits and play well is encouraging and can only make us a better team. "
Matt Fisher, making his first start since the season-opening Arkansas-Little Rock series, hit his first home run of the season and scored five runs in the game. Matt Bose was 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, five total RBI and two runs scored. Tyler Johnson started in right field and also went 2-for-3 with a grand slam, five runs batted in and two runs scored. Jason Fransz went 2-for-2 with a double before being replaced in left field by Brandon Jones, who got hits in each of his three at bats.
Blair Robinson went 2-for-3 in today's game with a double and starting shortstop Denver Kitch added his Big 12 Conference-high 14th stolen base of the season. Reggie Willits stole three bases and scored twice. Baker registered a single and a run scored.
Freshmen Zack Cherry and Jarod McAuliff each pitched one inning of relief, with Cherry allowing just one hit and McAuliff none.
The Sooners now hit the road for seven consecutive away games, beginning with this weekend's three-game series against No. 11 Arizona State at Hohokam Park in Mesa, Ariz. It will be the first of five weekends in a row in which the Sooners are scheduled to play a ranked team. OU then begins its Texas swing, with a game at Texas-Arlington on Wed., March 20, and a series at No. 13 Texas A&M, March 22-24.
