NORMAN, Okla. - In the third and deciding game of a three-game series against Lamar, the Oklahoma baseball team picked up a 12-8 victory Sunday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park. Junior Austin Mix (1-0) earned the win for Oklahoma despite pitching just an inning and two thirds. Lamar mounted a late-inning rally, however the Sooners held on to move their season mark to 7-2.

"This was a nice win for us," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "We still left some guys on base and there is still room for us to improve, but I like the way we bounced back to win this series. We've definitely have our bats going right now and we're starting to develop a good chemistry. This is a very young team and we can learn a lot from this series with Lamar."

The Sooners scored their 12 runs on 14 hits and the offense was led by juniors Eddie Cornejo and Chris Jakubauskas and freshman Matt Bose. Highlighted by his two-run double in the seventh inning, Cornejo went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Jakubauskas was also 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Bose hit his second home run of the season, a three-run shot in the fourth inning.

Sophomore Denver Kitch also had an excellent game, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. Center fielder Reggie Willits saw his six-game hitting streak come to end, but he is still batting .526 on the season. Through nine games, Jason Fransz has a batting average of .484, while Jakubauskas and Bose are each hitting .440.

Starter Buddy Blair pitched 4.1 innings and gave up three runs on seven hits before being relieved by Mix. Mark Roberts made his first appearance of the series, pitching the final three innings and giving up five runs on five hits. He did strike out four Cardinals, however.

The Sooners are next in action on Tuesday with a 2 p.m. game against TCU in Fort Worth, Texas. Oklahoma is scheduled to return home to host California-Riverside next weekend. The series will start at 3 p.m. on Friday and continue with 1 p.m. games on both Saturday and Sunday.
