NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma baseball team has placed 17 student-athletes on the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll, the league office announced this week. In all, 219 OU athletes were recognized for their academic achievements during the Fall semester.
Seniors Rocky Cherry (Coppell, Texas) and Heith Gadient (Rock Island, Ill.) were honored, as were juniors Luke Alexander (Carthage, Texas), Eddie Cornejo (Miro Lomo City, Calif.) and Austin Mix (Coppell, Texas). The sophomores honored were Wayne Baker (Edmond, Okla.), Buddy Blair (Tulsa, Okla.), Matt Fisher (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Spencer Wyman (Camarillo, Calif.). An incredible eight freshman garnered the prestigious honor, including Matt Bose (Midland, Texas), Zack Cherry (Coppell, Texas), Greg Kish (Redondo Beach, Calif.), Jarod McAuliff (Stillwater, Okla.), Ben Pinkston (Muskogee, Okla.), David Purcey (Dallas, Texas), Blair Robinson (Allen, Texas) and Scott Rooker (Dallas, Texas).
Bose, Gadient and Kish all garnered 4.0 grade point averages in the Fall semester and another 17 Sooners had GPAs of 3.0 or better. Cumulatively, the team boasted a 3.01 GPA during the most recent term, its highest in recent memory.
"We are certainly proud of the academic success our team is enjoying," said Oklahoma head coach Larry Cochell. "We stress education here and this particular team has shown a lot of discipline with its school work. We try to instill in the players that your education comes first and that you play baseball while going to school, not the other way around."
