NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma volleyball team has been on the verge of victory in its last three matches and Wednesday night they pulled through, defeating Iowa State 24-30, 30-25, 30-13, 24-30, 15-12 inside the Hilton Coliseum. OU has now beaten Iowa State three consecutive times. With the victory OU improves to 3-11 (5-17 overall) in Big 12 matches and stands alone in ninth place in the conference standings. Iowa State dropped 1-13 in conference and 10-16 overall.
"It feels good to get a win," said OU Head Coach Kalani Mahi. "Success is a great reward for our players who have continued to work hard all season."
Sophomore middle blocker Candice Woods killed 16 balls, while Jennifer Mosso contributed a career-high 15 kills. Senior Megan O'Connell and junior Christina Barlow registered 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
OU recorded a season-high 89 digs. Senior outside hitter Denise Griffin dug a career-high 20 balls. Senior setter Jessica Barney assisted on 51 balls and collected 14 digs for her third double-double in the last four matches. The Sooners had 16 block assists, led by Woods and Mosso who had four a piece.
"After losing the first game, we came out as the aggressor in the second session," said Mahi. "Iowa State seemed a bit tentative and we took advantage of that and held momentum through game four."
Mandi Harms had a match-high 21 kills for Iowa State. Brittany Dalager had a match-high 28 digs for the Cyclones.
"The fifth and deciding game was back and forth," said Mahi. "I could see we had control from the beginning because we came out as the aggressor again. You could tell the team knew they were going to win the entire game."
The win snapped a nine match losing streak for OU. It also marked the first road victory for Oklahoma since the 2000 season.
The Sooners return to action this Saturday, Nov. 9, when they host Texas Tech at 7 p.m. inside the Howard McCasland Field House. The match will be broadcast live on SoonerSports.com. To view the live video feed, click on the "Streaming Match Video" link on the right side of the page.
