Griffin A Doak Walker Award Semifinalist

Norman, Okla. - Oklahoma's Quentin Griffin has been named one of eight semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award, which is presented annually to the top running back in college football.
The other seven semifinalists are Chris Brown, Colorado; Avon Cobourne, West Virginia; Larry Johnson, Penn State; Willis McGahee, Miami; Artose Pinner, Kentucky; Cecil Sapp, Colorado State and Michael Turner, Northern Illinois.
Griffin, who ranks No. 9 in the nation in rushing yards per game and No. 3 in yards per carry, has 181 rushes for 1,243 yards and nine touchdowns. He has rushed for at least 100 yards in each Big 12 game this season.
The Humble, Texas native also has 20 pass receptions for 168 yards and three touchdowns.
"We are very fortunate to have such a phenomenal group of running backs as semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award," says Randall Goss, Chairman of the SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors, which met to decide the semifinal list "and also we congratulate all of the candidates who were nominated by their schools."
The 135 members of the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast their votes this week to determine the 2002 recipient. College football fans also have an opportunity to play a role. By logging on to ESPN.com anytime between November 20 and noon (EST) on Tuesday, November 26, fans may cast their votes for this year's winner. The results of the ESPN.com poll will count as one official vote.
On Monday, December 2, three finalists will be named, and, on Thursday, December 12, the recipient of the 2002 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN's Home Depot College Football Awards Show.
The award will be presented at the 2002 Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet in Dallas on Tuesday, January 28, 2003. Former Houston Oiler and 1977 Heisman Trophy winner Earl Campbell, who was selected last month to receive the 2002 PricewaterhouseCoopers Doak Walker Legends Award, will also be honored at the banquet.
Griffin also is one of 10 finalists for the Walter Camp Trophy, presented annually to the nation's top college player. Other Sooners being considered for awards include defensive tackle Tommie Harris, a finalist for the Lombardi Award, linebacker Teddy Lehman, a finalist for the Butkus Award, free safety Brandon Everage and cornerback Derrick Strait, semifinalists for the Thorpe Award and defensive end Jimmy Wilkerson, a semifinalist for the Hendricks Award.
