NORMAN, Okla. - The Big 12 announced Tuesday that four Sooners were named to the Volleyball Academic All-Big 12 First Team. Senior Lindsay Hoyt (elementary education) and junior Christina Barlow (elementary education) were nominated with a 4.0 grade point average. The 50 member team included three athletes with a 4.0 GPA, two of which were Oklahoma students and the other was Texas A&M senior Rebecca Wynalda.
Senior Jessica Barney, an English major from New Braunfels, Texas, had a 3.78 GPA and was also named to the first team. Rounding out the first team members for OU was sophomore Candice Woods, a business major from Moosomin, Saskatchewan (Canada), who also had a 3.78 GPA over the last two semesters.
"It has always been important to our staff to recruit well rounded athletes," said OU Head Coach Kalani Mahi. "We want the team to excel on the court but first they must take care of business in the classroom. I feel that these four are a testament to the hard work of the entire team. I am extremely proud of their intellectual effort."
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the volleyball academic all-league squad consisted of 44 first-team members combined with six on the second team. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better grade point average, while the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
