Norman, Okla. - Oklahoma cornerback Derrick Strait has been named the SBC Big 12 Conference's Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Sooners' 49-9 win at Baylor last Saturday. The junior had two interceptions for a school record 127 yards and one touchdown.
In addition, Strait had four tackles, one for a two-yard loss, and one pass deflection.
His first pick came in the opening half with Baylor driving at the OU six-yard line. Strait made the interception in the end zone and returned it 52 yards. Later he returned a second interception 75 yards for a TD.
The 127 yards broke a 56-year-old record. The previous Oklahoma mark for interception yards in a game belonged to Joe Golding, who returned one for 99 yards against Texas on Oct. 12, 1946.
This marked the seventh time this season that an Oklahoma player has received Big 12 player of the week honors.
Quarterbacks Kliff Kingsbury of Texas Tech and Josh Fields of Oklahoma State shared the offensive award this week, while Colorado ILB Aaron Killion picked up special team honors.
