NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma volleyball team struggled in the first two games, losing by a combined total of 19 (30-16, 30-25) before bouncing back to take the third game, 30-28. The Sooners couldn't turn the tide in the fourth game losing 30-17 and falling to the Colorado Buffaloes Saturday night at the Coors Event Center. The loss dropped OU to 4-10 on the season and 2-4 in Big 12 play. Colorado snapped a three game losing streak and improve to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in conference.
"I thought we played well in games two and three and played timid in the others," said OU Head Coach Kalani Mahi. "We passed well and served great, which were things we need to improve on and that improvement is good to see. For Kansas State we need to focus on becoming more aggressive in all areas of our game and really taking advantage of what the opponent gives us."
OU's offensive attack was led by outside hitters Megan O'Connell and Christina Barlow. The senior O'Connell had 13 kills, six digs and four block assists. Barlow, a junior, also had 13 kills and six digs. Senior setter Jessica Barney had 44 assists, her second highest output of the season. Freshman middle blocker Jennifer Mosso had 10 kills and seven block assists. From the back line, seniors Denise Griffin and Lindsay Hoyt recorded 11 and 10 digs respectively.
The Buffaloes were led by Kim Taskey who put away 18 kills. Barely out done was Monique Gerlach who registered 16 kills. Colorado collected 33 (81-48) more kills than Oklahoma and 21 (65-44) more digs, which directly related to the disparity in hitting percentage, where CU led .292 (81K-32E-168TA) to .145 (48-26-152)
Oklahoma returns home Wednesday, Oct. 9 for a 7 p.m., match with Kansas State, that marks "Hispanic Heritage Night" with free sombreros for the first 100 fans in attendance. Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children. Admission is free for OU students with a valid student I.D.
