NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma Men's Gymnastics Assistant Coach Guard Young has been named as an official member of the USA National Team, which will travel to the World Gymnastics Championships in Decrebon, Hungary, Nov. 20-24. The selection committee at the U.S. Training Center announced that Young will compete on the floor exercise.

"I am very excited and honored to compete for our country," said Young. "Gymnasts don't have many opportunities to be among the best in the world, so this is really something I look forward to and expect to learn from."

The committee only selected individual competitors, as opposed to all-arounders because this year's World Championships will only feature event finals, no team or all-around competition.

Young was named an alternate two weeks ago when he competed for the selection committee.

Morgan Hamm, a 2000 Olympian, was named to the squad over Young despite the fact that he didn't compete for the committee during the selection trials because of an injury. Hamm had two weeks to prove he was healthy enough to compete, but didn't recover from injuries to both of his ankles in time.

Young has been named a member of the national team before and competed in the 2001 World Championships. At the 2001 championships in Thant, Belgium, the U.S. Team finished in second place, its best result in recent history. Young is now a step closer to his ultimate goal of being a member of the 2004 Olympic Team.

"I learned a lot last year, especially about the format," said Young. "They are very timely and orderly with workout schedules and events. I think that order will help me prepare better this year."

Young graduated from Brigham Young and is in his third season as a member of the OU coaching staff.
