NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma soccer team travels to Stillwater for a
showdown with Oklahoma State in the Bedlam game on Friday night at 7 p.m. In addition
to state bragging rights, a Big 12 tournament bid is on the line for the second
consecutive year.
Oklahoma dropped to 4-5 in the conference standings and 11-7 overall with road
losses to Colorado and Nebraska over the weekend.
On Friday evening, Colorado got goals from Ashlie Mihalcin and Kristina Lamberty
to put away the Sooners, 2-1, in Boulder. Senior forward Shannon Wing (Broken
Arrow, Okla.) scored for OU in the 76th minute but it was too little too late
for OU.
On Sunday, Oklahoma fell to No. 25 Nebraska, 1-0, when NU senior Christine Latham
scored what would be the game-winning goal with just over a minute left before
the halftime break from 25 yards out. The teams battled into the second half with
Nebraska maintaining the 1-0 lead. With just two and a half minutes left in the
game, Oklahoma senior Krissy Dawson (Peoria, Ariz.) got a shot at the NU box off
a corner kick but Miller made a diving save to seal the victory for Nebraska.
Game 19 Preview: Oklahoma at Oklahoma State
After beginning the season a combined 17-0 both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State have
struggled as of late. The Sooners have dropped their last four conference games
to fall to 11-7 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12. The Cowgirls upset No. 25 Nebraska
on Friday, 2-1, but are still just 3-6 in conference play and 12-6 overall.
Both teams need a final victory in the Bedlam game to advance to the Big 12 Tournament.
Only one will make it.
If Oklahoma beats OSU, the Sooners will be heading to San Antonio with a seeding
anywhere from fourth to seventh depending on other Big 12 matchups. The top eight
teams in conference play make the Big 12 Tournament.
If Oklahoma State knocks off OU, the Sooners would be tied with Iowa State and
OSU with 4-6 records in the Big 12. The Sooners would be out of the tournament
because both teams would have regular season victories over Oklahoma.
This do-or-die scenario is not new to the Bedlam game. Last season, a Big 12 Tournament
bid was also on the line and the Sooners prevailed in overtime, 2-1. The game
was played in Norman in front of a record 1,325 fans at John Crain Field. The
same atmosphere is expected for this season's game in Stillwater on Friday night.
Oklahoma State is led by junior forward Jere Boykin with eight goals and three
assists this season. Sophomore forward Jolene Schweitzer, freshman midfielder
Cassie Lewis and junior forward Kim Graves are also credible scoring threats for
OSU.
Senior goalkeeper Kat Doud has started 14 games and logged 1259:21 minutes for
the Cowgirls. Doud has allowed 13 goals for a GAA of 0.93. She has 40 saves for
a .755 average and five shutouts.
Oklahoma State leads the all-time series with OU, 5-1. The Sooners have never
won in Stillwater in three previous attempts. The series has witnessed six overtime
periods and the last five games have each been decided by a single goal.
Womack Extends Record
Junior forward Logan Womack recorded the first hat trick in Oklahoma soccer history
with her three scores against Big 12 rival Baylor on Sept. 27. Womack's final
score gave her the career goals record at OU with 27, moving her past former Sooner
Jonette Coquat (26). Womack has eight goals so far this season to push her career
total to 28.
Dawson's Peak
Senior forward Krissy Dawson is tied with teammate Shannon Wing and former Sooner
Jonette Coquat for the Oklahoma career assists record with 15. Dawson leads the
team with eight assists this season and 22 points.
Wingin' It
Senior Shannon Wing is tied for the OU career assists record with 15. She's contributed
seven assists and three goals this season. Wing has 18 starts in 18 games for
2002, extending her streak to 77-straight starts for OU over the past four seasons.
Mac Attack
Freshman Lauren MacIver leads all newcomers at Oklahoma with 12 points for the
Sooners this season (four goals, four assists). MacIver scored twice against Big
12 rival Texas Tech for her first multiple goal game at OU.
Nelson Making Impact
Freshman Becky Nelson has 10 points this season including four goals and two assists.
She ranks fifth on the team in shots and scored her first multiple-goal game in
a 2-0 Sooner win at Kansas on Oct. 13.
Tough Schedule
Oklahoma's 2002 schedule includes five teams ranked in the current NSCAA/adidas
National Rankings. Stanford is No. 1 while Texas is ranked third with Santa Clara
fourth, Texas A&M sixth and Nebraska 25th.
Big 12 Rankings
The Oklahoma Sooners are tied for seventh place with Kansas and Missouri in the
latest NSCAA/Adidas Central rankings. Four additional Big 12 teams are ranked,
including No. 1 Texas, No. 2 Texas A&M, No. 6 Nebraska and No. 10 Colorado. In
the national rankings, Texas holds down the No. 3 spot with Texas A&M at No. 6.
Nebraska rounds out the poll at No. 25.
Head Coach Randy Evans
Randy Evans, in his fourth season as head coach of the Oklahoma soccer program,
has the 2002 Sooners at 11-7 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12 Conference. The Sooners
won a school-record 11 games last season while compiling a stellar 8-1-1 record
at home and notched their first victories ever over conference rivals Oklahoma
State, Texas Tech and Missouri. OU came within a goal of upsetting Texas A&M --
the eventual tournament champion -- in its second consecutive appearance in the
Big 12 Conference Tournament. Forward Logan Womack became the first OU player
to be named first team All-Big 12 while goalkeeper Catherine Wade and defender
Christen Secrest garnered Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honors. Twelve OU
soccer student-athletes were also named Academic All-Big 12 selections.
