NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma volleyball team battled inconsistency, which resulted in a sweep at the hands of No. 25 Texas A&M, 30-18, 30-21, 30-24, Wednesday night inside the Howard McCasland Field House. Oklahoma fell to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in league, while Texas A&M improved to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in conference.
"Texas A&M was a big challenge for us," said OU Head Coach Kalani Mahi. "When we had our game in high gear we played with them. When we lost concentration they took advantage. This consistency issue has been a problem all season and something we will continue to work on."
Oklahoma hit .157(37K-19E-115TA) on the match, never breaking the .200 mark in a single game. On the other hand Texas A&M hit .383 (52-11-107) for the match, with a game two high of .533 (18-2-30). Texas A&M also out-blocked OU 19 (1BS, 18BA ) to 5 (1BS, 4BA).
"Oklahoma is much improved," said Texas A&M Head Coach Laurie Corbelli. "They came out and fought hard. We really had a hard time handling them. Megan O'Connell was scary, we really had to focus on her early."
O'Connell was uncharacteristically wild tonight, as she only hit .074 (8-6-27) despite eight kills. Junior outside hitter Christina Barlow led OU with nine kills and a .226 hitting percentage (9-2-31). Senior libero Denise Griffin registered nine digs.
"In the locker room between games two and three we talked about competing," said O'Connell. "We knew we could take game three. We just had to pick up our game and become the aggressor."
Oklahoma travels to the University of Colorado to face the Buffaloes, Saturday night at 7 p.m. in the Coors Event Center. OU returns home Wednesday, Oct. 9, for a match with Big 12 foe Kansas State at 7 p.m. inside the McCasland Field House. Next Wednesday night is "Hispanic Heritage Night", with the first 100 fans receiving free sombreros.
Admission is $5 dollars for adults and $2 for children. Admission is free for OU students with a valid student I.D.
