Baylor
Baylor returns to Waco this weekend for the team's first home Big 12 Conference
games of the year. The Bears are 22-5-2 at home against Big 12 opponents through
the program's first six seasons (10-4-1 in three seasons under Cowell). Senior
Tamura Crawley has moved into fourth place in the Baylor record book for consecutive
games played with 69. Crawley has appeared in every game Baylor has played during
her four years, starting all but one match.
Colorado
Ashlie Mihalcin's first career goal couldn't close the four-goal gap that Kansas
built en route to upending the Buffs 5-1 in the Big 12 opener for both teams.
The four-goal deficit was the largest since KU shutout Colorado 4-0 a year ago
in Boulder. Kansas' Caroline Smith's score in the sixth minute was the quickest
goal scored against the Buffs all season. Colorado had two scoring chances in
the final minutes of the second overtime period, but couldn't convert either as
the Buffs tied Missouri, 2-2, in their first overtime game of the season. The
Buffs would hold off Missouri and take the 1-0 advantage into the break for just
the third time this season, first since a 1-0 halftime edge over Wyoming on Sept.
6. Senior Meghan Swanzy scored her first goal of the season as her shot in the
32nd minute went between the legs and under the gloves of Missouri keeper Megan
Duncan. Colorado took a season-high 22 shots while allowing Missouri to take an
opponent season high 23. The Buffs return to Boulder for a four-game homestand,
beginning with No. 8 Texas A&M on Friday and No. 4 Texas Sunday. It marks the
first time in the program's history that a pair of top-10 ranked teams will be
in Boulder the same weekend.
Iowa State
After scoring only one goal in 71 shot attempts over a four-game span, Iowa State
converted two of five shots at Texas A&M. Iowa State held a 60-23 shot advantage
over Massachusetts and Fairfield at the UMass Classic, but the Cyclones were outshot
63-13 by Texas A&M and Texas a week later. ISU holds a 139-130 advantage in shots
over its opponents this season. Freshman Kristina Baumann tallied her second goal
and second assist of the season against Texas A&M. Baumann leads the team with
33 shots and is second in scoring with six points. Junior goalkeeper Beth Chapman
recorded a career-high 11 saves at Texas A&M on Sept. 27. With her 66th career
start against Texas on Sept. 29, Iowa State senior defender Tiffany Belz moved
into fourth place on the ISU all-time career games played chart.
Kansas
Kansas soccer defeated Colorado, 5-1, and tied 18th-ranked Nebraska, 1-1, in front
of two record breaking crowds at SuperTarget field. The crowd of 714 on Friday
vs. Colorado set a new attendance record for soccer, but that record would be
shattered by 147 the following game on Sunday vs Nebraska, when 861 fans would
show up. KU had never beaten or tied the Huskers in eight previous matches. Freshman
Caroline Smith scored three goals and had an assist on the weekend to lead the
Jayhawk scorers. Smith had the game-winner against Colorado and the lone goal
in the Nebraska match. She leads the Big 12 Conference with 10 goals scored and
23 points. KU's two leading scorers, Smith and sophomore Rachel Gilfillan both
hail from the state of Minnesota and were both Miss Soccer in Minnesota their
senior seasons in high school. KU is 1-4-1 all-time against Baylor, beating the
Bears for the first time last season, 3-0, and 4-2 all time vs Texas Tech, defeating
the Red Raiders, 3-2, a season ago.
Missouri
The Tigers played their fifth overtime game, including their fourth double overtime
match, of the 2002 season. Fifty percent of Missouri's contests this season have
been determined in post-regulation play. Freshman Amber Swinehart scored her fourth
goal of the year against Colorado. Likewise, Missy Peabody picked up her fifth
assist and Adriene Davis scored her third goal. Midfielder Karen Bauer was honored
as the Varsity M Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 23-29. Varsity
M is a branch of the Missouri Alumni Association comprising of former Missouri
athletes.
Nebraska
Senior Christine Latham scored the Huskers' only goal and became the school's
all-time points leader as Nebraska tied Kansas, 1-1, Sunday afternoon at SuperTarget
field in Lawrence, Kan. The goal was Latham's seventh of the season and brought
her total career points to 147, overtaking former Husker Meghan Anderson (146).
The tie against Kansas marks the first time a Husker team has tied three games
in one season. Latham also dropped in two goals in a 4-0 shutout of Missouri Friday
night. Senior Kori Saunders began the scoring for Nebraska 13 minutes into the
game against the Tigers when sophomore Jenna Cooper sent her the ball off a corner
kick. Freshman Nikki Baker scored her second career goal with less than two minutes
remaining in the first half. The Huskers return home to open their Big 12 home
schedule against Texas and Texas A&M this weekend.
Oklahoma
The Sooners came from behind to beat Baylor, 4-2, on Friday night and blanked
Texas Tech, 4-0, on Sunday to open Big 12 play. Oklahoma recorded the first hat
trick in the program's history when preseason All-Big 12 forward Logan Womack
iced the Baylor game with three goals. Womack is now tied with former Sooner Jonette
Coquat for the OU career goals scored record at 26. Senior Krissy Dawson also
contributed three goals over the weekend with her score against Baylor and two
against Tech. Freshman Lauren MacIver wrapped up the scoring for the Sooners with
two goals against the Red Raiders. OU has six shutouts in 10 games this season
and remains undefeated at home. Oklahoma steps out of conference action to host
TCU on Friday night before traveling to Iowa State on Sunday.
Oklahoma State
Oklahoma State remained undefeated through the first week of Big 12 action, defeating
Texas Tech and Baylor, both by a score of 2-0. Sophomore defender Marcela Nov
notched her first goal of the season in the second period against Tech. On Sunday,
junior forward Jere Boykin was the hero of the game, coming off the bench to score
both OSU goals. Sophomore midfielder Nikki Wojtowicz snagged her 10th assist in
10 games on Boykin's first goal to keep her average at 1.00 per game. At 10-0,
the Cowgirls have equaled the win total of the 1996 squad and need just one more
to post the best record in program history. The Cowgirls have recorded four consecutive
2-0 shutouts, dating back to the Northeastern State contest on Sept. 18. Senior
goalkeeper Kat Doud has posted five shutouts and holds a personal-best 0.32 goals
against average.
Texas
With a win and a tie over the past week, Texas concludes its longest homestand
of 2002 (4 games) with a 3-0-1 mark. The Longhorns are now unbeaten at home (5-0-1)
so far this season as well as over their last four matches (3-0-1). Additionally,
Texas has three shutouts over its last four contests. The Texas offense has scored
15 goals over its last three matches while helping the Longhorns to a pair of
7-0 victories over that span. Of note, UT is now tied for first among all Big
12 teams in goals scored (26) despite playing in one less match than eight of
the 11 conference squads. Texas is also well ahead of its goal-scoring pace from
2001 when the Horns only had 20 goals through the first nine matches of the year.
Texas' defense not only posted its fourth shutout of the 2002 campaign on Sept.
29 against Iowa State, but has now allowed only seven goals through nine matches,
including one in the last 418 minutes of action, while accounting for 10 points
over the last eight contests.
Texas A&M
Of the six matches this season, A&M has played five nationally-ranked opponents
and has a record of 2-3 against them. All three of the losses were outside the
friendly confines of the Aggie Soccer Complex. 47 of A&M's 73 points this season
have come from a freshman or sophomore. Even freshman goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak
contributed with an assist in Friday's 4-2 win over Iowa State. Senior midfielder
Heather Ragsdale is on fire. In just six games, she has four goals and three assists
and has tallied a goal or an assist in all six matches. The A&M defense has been
outstanding the last five matches, allowing just three goals. The defense is allowing
a stingy 7.8 shots per match while the offense is taking 21.5 per game. In the
last five matches the Aggies have outshot their opponents, 143-24.
Texas Tech
Texas Tech has spent the better part of September on the road. The Red Raiders
kicked off the season in Syracuse, N. Y. The team then opened up at home by hosting
Southwest Texas State and West Texas A&M. The team has spent the last three weekends
on the road and will return home this weekend to face Missouri and Kansas. With
the losses to Oklahoma State and Oklahoma over the weekend, Texas Tech's record
against Oklahoma schools under Coach Oskam drops to 7-7.
