NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma Head Volleyball Coach Kalani Mahi recently announced the hiring of Josh Ivans as an assistant coach. Ivans replaces Joel McCartney, who accepted head coaching duties at Winthrop (S.C.). Ivans' responsibilities will include recruiting, game day management and on-court coaching duties.
"I couldn't have found a better opportunity, based on the great people I work with and the wonderful atmosphere here at OU," said Ivans. "The team is enthusiastic and excited, Kalani and Chris Mahi are excited, and I am also incredibly excited. I'm ready and committed to helping us improve daily."
Ivans, a native of Valencia, Calif., comes to OU with six years of coaching experience plus club and collegiate playing exposure. Most recently, Ivans was a graduate assistant coach at Wichita State University during the 1999 season. Prior to that, he coached the women's volleyball team at Graceland College (Iowa) from 1996-1999. Along with coaching the women's team, Ivans was a member of the men's team that captured the 1998 national NIRSA championship. Ivans was named to the All-American Tournament team for his performance.
Besides coaching at the collegiate level, Ivans has been a youth camp instructor at the USA Volleyball National Development Camps from 1996-2000. His responsibilities included skill training in goal implementation strategies, athletic enhancement and communications techniques for junior high and high school students.
"Josh adds a high level of playing experience, energy and a greae3t deal of knowledge of the game," said Mahi. "I know he'll represent The University of Oklahoma very well."
A 1999 graduate of Graceland, Ivans earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and social sciences.
