NORMAN, Okla. - The Jim Thorpe Association, which annually gives the Jim Thorpe Award to the nation's top defensive back, has added Oklahoma safety Brandon Everage to its list of players to watch for the award. Fellow Sooners Roy Williams and Derrick Strait were previously on the list and Everage was added after a dominating performance at Air Force.
The 5-11, 189-lb. sophomore made quite an impact during the Sooners' win over Air Force, racking up 12 tackles and considerable praise from the Falcons' coaches. Chuck Peterson, Air Force's offensive coordinator, sought out Everage in the locker room after the game and personally congratulated the Granger, Texas, native on his dominating play. Air Force's usually dominant rushing attack was held to just 137 yards and failed to score a touchdown for the first time in five years.
Williams made eight tackles in the win over Air Force and remains a top candidate for the prestigious award. He is now holds the all-time OU record for tackles for loss by a defensive back, with 22.
Strait returned an interception for a touchdown in OU's season opener versus North Carolina and continues to merit praise for his coverage skills.
