Final StatsQuotes

Oklahoma 38, Kansas State 37
Sept. 29, 2001 - Norman, Okla.

  • OU has now played in 15 games at Owen Field in its history involving two top-10 teams and the Sooners are 9-6 in those contests.

  • Today's game marked the sixth in which OU and Kansas State have matched up when both teams were ranked. The series is tied when both teams are ranked, with OU winning the last three such outings.

  • True freshman center Vince Carter made his first career start while redshirt-freshman receiver Mark Clayton also started for the first time.

  • Roy Williams' 18-yard return of a fumble for a touchdown in the first quarter was the fourth touchdown the Sooner defense has scored this season. It was Williams' second career touchdown and his first since the 2000 season opener against UTEP. He returned an interception the distance earlier this year versus North Texas, but a penalty negated the play.

  • Nate Hybl's 75-yard TD pass to Antwone Savage in the third quarter was the longest completion of his career. Before today, his previous long was 57 yards to Josh Norman last game versus North Texas. Hybl also threw a 63-yard score to Savage today.

  • Antwone Savage's 75-yard catch was the longest of his career. He scored on a 74-yard catch last year at Kansas State. Savage's 138 yards today (on just two catches) were a career high and tied him for the ninth-largest single-game receiving yardage total in OU history (Johnny Barr also racked up 138 yards in the 1968 Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl).

  • OU's 89-yard scoring drive in the first quarter was its longest of the year in terms of distance.

  • The Sooners' 16-play, 71-yard drive in the fourth quarter that culminated with a Tim Duncan 33-yard field goal took 6:10 and was the longest of the year in terms of duration. The previous long this year was 4:48 at Air Force in the team's second game.

  • Quentin Giffin's 47-yard pass reception in the second quarter was a career long. His previous long was 36 yards last season.

  • Jeff Ferguson had his eighth punt of the year downed inside the 20 yard line when his boot was spotted at the one yard line in the second quarter. He also had one downed inside the 20 in the third quarter, giving him 58 in his career. He also recorded the 37th punt of 50 yards or more in his career.

  • Antwone Savage completed his first ever pass on a fake punt play late in the second quarter, a 33-yard score to reserve quarterback Hunter Wall. The play marked the first ever for Wall, a redshirt-freshman.

  • Antwone Savage's 226 all-purpose yards today ranks second during the Bob Stoops era. Brandon Daniels amassed 268 all-purpose yards at Notre Dame in 1999.

  • Matt McCoy made his first career interception with one minute remaining in the second quarter.

  • Today's crowd of 75,862 is the largest since last year's Nebraska game (75,989) and marked the third-largest in an Oklahoma-Kansas State series. The largest was 79,655 at Arrowhead Stadium in last year's Big 12 Championship.

  • Kansas State quarterback Ell Roberson ran for 115 yards in today's game. The last player to break the century mark rushing vs. OU was Nebraska's Eric Crouch last year (103 yards).

  • Kansas State's 37 points were the most scored against OU since Texas Tech scored 38 points in a 38-28 victory over the Sooners in 1999.

  • Oklahoma's nine yards rushing were the fewest ever in a Sooner victory. The previous low was 11 yards in the regular season versus Kansas State last year.

  • Kansas State gained 444 yards of total offense, 120 yards more than OU's 324 yards. North Carolina also outgained Oklahoma in this year's season opener.

  • Bob Stoops is now 8-1 in his Oklahoma career against ranked teams (eight consecutive) and 6-0 versus teams ranked in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 10.
