Norman, Okla. - The Big 12 Conference announced the 2001 Preseason Volleyball Poll earlier this week. Nebraska received 10 of the 11 first-place votes by conference head coaches, while Texas A&M picked up one first-place vote for a preseason pick of second.
The Huskers look to defend the Big 12 title by going after their fourth consecutive conference championship. The defending national champion has won four of five conference titles since the Big 12's inception in 1996. Texas took the title in 1997.
Oklahoma looks to improve upon this year's preseason and last year's final ranking of 10th. Head Coach Kalani Mahi returns two starters and four letterwinners from last year's squad. He also welcomes six newcomers to the program, including Candice Woods, a Canadian Junior National Team player. Woods is expected to arrive in Norman in late August due to her committment with the junior national team this summer. In addition to Woods, Coach Mahi has added All-State selection and Oklahoma native Emily Kincaid to the roster. Kincaid, an outside hitter, ended her prep career as Broken Arrow High School's all-time kill leader.
Oklahoma opens its season at Sam Houston State Tournament in Huntsville, Texas, on Aug. 31-Sept. 1. OU will face Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Sam Houston State in the two-day five-team tournament. OU opens its home and conference schedule against Texas A&M on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m.
