NORMAN, Okla. - After a scrimmage which saw pleasantly surprising results from a number of players, the Oklahoma football team went back to work on Thursday with hopes of improving even more as their season opener with North Carolina approaches. Head coach Bob Stoops was again very pleased with the crispness of Thursday's workouts and after watching film of Wednesday's scrimmage, is even more encouraged about his team.
"Today was another good, solid day," said Stoops. "We had a good practice. We watched the film from last night and overall, there was good hitting and good tackling. We liked it that our offense took care of the ball. There weren't many penalties and turnovers. All the quarterbacks were good, it was pretty solid."
Stoops and his staff have been very pleased throughout the summer workouts, which they attribute to another year of growth and experience in the program for the majority of the squad.
"I like the attitude and work habits of this team," said Stoops. "There's some more maturity and obviously more experience there. They have another year of being ingrained in what we're doing here."
Junior running back Quentin Griffin was very impressive in Wednesday's scrimmage, no doubt a reflection of the approximately 10-15 pounds of muscle he added through rigorous summer workouts.
"He's just stronger and harder to get a hold of," said Stoops. "The additional weight and quickness just makes it a little more difficult to tackle him. He's improved his speed when you look at his 40 times."
The Sooners will continue two-a-day workouts Friday and will hold an open scrimmage at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Prior to taking the field in the evening, OU will hold Fan Appreciation Day from 11 a.m. to noon on the practice fields south of the stadium.
