OU's Griffin Named to Preseason Doak Walker Award "Watch List"

NORMAN, Okla. - The SMU Athletic Forum has announced the names of the 43 preseason candidates for the 2001 Doak Walker Award, given annually to the nation's top college running back, and Oklahoma junior Quentin Griffin has been recognized as a player to watch.

The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select eight semifinalists on Nov. 8 and the winner of the 2001 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN's Home Depot College Award Show on Dec. 6. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held at The Fairmont Hotel in Dallas on Jan. 29, 2002.

"The preseason candidates for the 2001 Doak Walker Award are not only being recognized for their excellence on the field, but also for their achievements in the classroom and in the community," said Randall Gross, chair of the SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors. "We look forward to watching the progress of each of these outstanding student-athletes this fall."

Griffin, a 5-6, 183-lb. native of Aldine, Texas, was named a first-team All-Big 12 performer during Oklahoma's 2000 national championship season and became the first OU running back to break the 1,000-yard barrier since De'Mond Parker accomplished that feat in 1998. He scored six touchdowns in the Sooners' 63-14 defeat of Texas, breaking a school record and tying the conference mark. Griffin was the leading rushed in OU's Orange Bowl victory over Florida State and was a second-team Academic All-Big 12 selection.
