NORMAN, Okla. - Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops announced this morning that Nate Hybl has been named the Sooners' starting quarterback.
Hybl (HIB-ul), a 6-3, 215-pound junior from Hazelhurst, Ga., emerged from OU's four quarterbacks and in particular a competition with Jason White, a sophomore from Tuttle, Okla.
"In discussions with our offensive coaches, and specifically (quarterback coach) Chuck Long and (assistant head coach and offensive coordinator) Mark Mangino, and after a thorough evaluation through our entire camp and three major scrimmages, we just feel that Nate has earned the right to be the starter," Stoops said. "I think he had one interception through our entire camp and that includes passing drills and scrimmages. That's more than 600 attempts."
And Hybl did not win the job by default.
"Both Nate and Jason displayed good presence in the huddle and leadership on the field," Stoops said. "One of the reasons we feel so positive about Nate is that he did not earn the job through poor play on anyone else's part. Jason has shown great qualities to also be a winning quarterback and starter, but Nate has done things a little better."
Stoops said both Hybl and White have been made aware of the decision.
"Their reactions were great and I think they understand this is where it is at this point," Stoops said. "Both of them wanted to be the player we chose, but they understand the bigger picture. This competition has helped them both improve and they recognize that."
Hybl sparkled in Wednesday night's scrimmage, the last major scrimmage for the Sooners before their Aug. 25 opener against North Carolina. He completed 24-of-29 passes for 179 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.
Hybl, who transferred to Oklahoma from Georgia, played in five games last season, his first at OU, and completed 9-of-16 passes for 144 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
