Sooners Prepare for Wednesday Night's Scrimmage

    NORMAN, Okla. - Bob Stoops' Oklahoma Sooners again worked on game situations and fundamentals during Tuesday's practices and is prepared for the scrimmage to be held Wednesday at approximately 6 p.m. on Owen Field. Stoops seemed impressed with the continued improvement he has noticed and is enjoying the competitive nature of his players.

    "I feel like the guys went at it pretty well," said Stoops. "It was a pretty good work day and we're executing pretty well. We're making some good progress."

    The squad ended Tuesday evening's practice by taking part in a two-minute drill, which pitted the offense against the defense and the clock. The Sooner defense performed quite well, proving the value of the drill for the entire team as similar situations are so common during games.

    "They did well in the two-minute drill," said Stoops of his defense. "They executed quite well and our offense needs to continue to work and communicate. Our defense gets used to seeing them quite a bit."

    One member of that defense, sophomore linebacker Teddy Lehman, from Fort Gibson, has a new uniform number. He is now wearing number 11 but is impressing his coach nonetheless.

    "Teddy can run, he can close and he has a lot of power," said Stoops. "Coach (Jerry) Schmidt timed him around 4.44 in the 40 several times over the summer here and he's going to be an excellent player. He was second in the state in the 100 (meters) at 225 pounds, so he can really run."

    The multi-talented football squad broke out into song after the evening practice as safety Roy Williams celebrated his 21st birthday.

    "We're a bad singing group," said Stoops. "It was Roy's birthday today, also Coach (Jonathan) Hayes and Coach (Mark) Mangino had birthdays this week. We're tying to get everyone in, but we sound pretty bad."

    OU will take Wednesday morning off and scrimmage Wednesday night at Owen Field. The public is welcome to come and support the team as it prepares for the fast-approaching 2001 slate, which begins on Aug. 25 versus North Carolina.
