Sooners Head to Regionals
The sixth-seeded University of Oklahoma women's golf team will compete in the 2001 NCAA Golf Central Region tournament May 10-12 at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind. The 21-team field will consist of Texas, Tulsa, Oklahoma State, New Mexico State, LSU, Oklahoma, Purdue, Alabama, Kent State, California, Central Florida, Baylor, San Francisco, Florida, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Minnesota, Idaho, Oral Roberts and Princeton. Allie Blomquist (Wisconsin) and Nina Reis (North Texas) will also compete.

Competing for the Sooners will be freshman Lisa Meldrum, sophomore Allison Johnson, junior Wendy Martin, junior Jennifer Tannehill and redshirt-freshman Hope Edge.

OU Golfers Honored by Big 12 Conference
The University of Oklahoma women's golf team took home two of the top three awards from the Big 12 Conference for the 2001 season. These awards, as well as the all-conference teams, were voted on by the Big 12 coaches.

Freshman Lisa Meldrum was selected as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year after firing a career-low 67 in the second round of the Big 12 Championships. She finished tied for first and competed in a playoff with two-time Big 12 champ Amelia Moses of Missouri and three-time Big 12 Player of the Year Maria Boden of Oklahoma State. Meldrum was also the only freshman selected to the all-conference team (she was a second-team pick), and holds the Big 12's lowest freshman scoring average for the year with a 75.0.

Head coach Carol Ludvigson received her first Big 12 Coach of the Year award after receiving two from the old Big Eight conference. Ludvigson, who is in her 16th year of coaching, was also named the Co-National Coach of the Year in 1995, as well as a three-time NCAA Regional Coach of the Year (1991, 1994, 1995).

Sophomore Allison Johnson was named to the Big 12 All-Conference second team and was also one of two players in the Big 12 to maintain a 4.0 GPA.

Seven Sooners were named to the Big 12 All-Academic Team, more than any other school in the conference. In addition to Johnson, other first-team honorees were Meldrum, junior Wendy Martin, redshirt-freshman Hope Edge, junior Betsy Berry and junior Jennifer James. Junior Jennifer Tannehill was named to the second team.

Coach Ludvigson Says...
"We are very excited about the regional and everybody is ready to go. The girls have worked hard on their short game this week and we are stroking the ball well. We are seeded sixth and knowing that they take the top eight, the girls are really confident. We are just focusing on getting through regionals and making it to nationals right now. After this week, when the girls get through finals, then they can breathe a little easier and they won't be under as much stress. This is a team that I see being very confident about the tournament ahead."
